National Schizophrenia Awareness Day
National Schizophrenia Awareness Day is taking place on the 25th of July and is run by the mental health charity Rethink Mental Health.
An estimated 1 in 100 people in the UK currently live with schizophrenia which amounts to over 600,000 individuals.
National Schizophrenia Awareness Day provides the opportunity to debunk the negative and often damaging stigma that surrounds schizophrenia. It also gives homage to the birthday of the German psychiatrist Dr Emil Kraepelin who was a pioneer of the classification of schizophrenia as a distinct mental illness.
In this guide we shall seek to gain a better understanding of schizophrenia as a mental health condition and break down the misconceptions that are often associated with the disorder. In doing so we will be able to better support those in our communities and workplaces with schizophrenia.
